Hotel Milano, one of the oldest buildings in the historical center of Salice, is proud of its long past. Although it is difficult to establish the exact date of construction, we know that there was a building on this site as far back as 1727. It was the convent of the San Marziano Order. In fact, on the right side of the arch near the building now housing the kitchen, there is an epigraph : "antico orto dei RR.PP. di San Marziano 1727" ("antique garden of RR.PP of San Marziano 1727"). On the north-east side of the Hotel is the oldest private home in town which was restored in the late 1980's.
This was a small fortress home of the noble Malaspina family which provided hospitality for Cardinal Ghislieri, later to become Pope Pio V. The historical record which testifies to this visit goes as such: "Hae Malaspinarum aedes...anno reparate MDLVIII..A.M. Ghisliery cardinalem ospitarunt". And, on the north side of this house we find the following inscription in latin: "nulla ora fluat, cuius non meminisse velis". This declares the guest 's pleasant memories of his vacations in this residence.
Around the 1890's, this antique building is already functioning as a hotel, managed by the Bertolini family. This family owned a string of hotels in various Italian localities: one of the first hotel chains. The property changed ownership and became part of the S.p.A. Terme di Salice, the Thermal Spa company, and later finally became Alberghi di Salice S.p.A.
The Hotel was managed by various esteemed families through the years up to 1951 when the RAINA family began managing and finally bought the property in 1956, still theirs today and operated by them. Sig.ra Maria Capettini Raina, named "cavaliere" in 1957, an honorific title given to those who distinguish themselves in their jobs, managed the hotel herself for more than 30 years.
Today the third generation of Raina's operate the hotel and continue to renovate the building so that it may continue to emit the special feeling it has always given to its clientele. |
