Salice Terme and the Oltrepo...
The Oltrepo Pavese is an area of the Province of Pavia, lying south of the Po River, wedged between Emilia-Romgana, Piedmont and Liguria. A territory, shaped like a cluster of grapes, which includes cultivated fields, hills with family vineyards and mountains (the Apennines). Often referred to as "another Tuscany" because of its hills and vineyards, fields and natural beauty, the oltrepo is a well kept secret, practically untouched by tourists and not on itineraries of mainstream tours.
But it shouldn't be missed by anyone who loves to get off the beaten track and discover the uniqueness of this corner of Southern Lombardy.
To begin with, there is no lack of good wineries, often small and family operated but tourist friendly. A micro-climate allows for a good production of red and white wines: Bonarda, Barbera and Sangue di Giuda and white wines: Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Spumante. The quality of the wines is assured by the prestigious DOC labeling system which guarantees the quality of much of the oltrepo produce.
Like the rest of Italy, there are numerous small hamlets and villages scattered around the hills. Restaurants serving local food and wine are still well priced and often situated in enchanted settings where you feel the true Italy, far off the beaten paths of tourists. The small village of Salice Terme is situated in the heart of the oltrepo and has been known since Roman times for its thermal springs and health treatments for chronic bronchitis, dermatological and gynecological problems as well as circulatory disorders.
Recently the Wellness Spa has been renovated and upgraded with the addition of an indoor thermal water swimming pool and massage center. Italians from Milan, Genova and Turin have come to Salice since the early 1900's for its spa and continue to find a haven from the stress and hectic life of the city.
